Who wrote the song, “Happy Birthday to You”?
“Happy Birthday to You” was first written in 1893 by two sisters named Patty and Mildred Hill. Patty was a kindergarten teacher, and her older sister, Mildred, was a skilled pianist and musician.
Patty was bothered by the music that she had to teach at school. The songs were usually too difficult for small children to remember and sing. So she began to work with Mildred to write simple but pleasing songs for children.
One of the songs the sisters wrote, “Good Morning to All,” became very popular with the children. Nobody knows how the words actually got changed to “Happy Birthday to You,” but one theory is believed to be true: the children in Patty’s class liked the song “Good Morning to All” so much that they would start singing it with different words for all kinds of occasions.
One of the occasions must have been somebody’s birthday, and the words “Happy Birthday to You” has stuck until present day.

ふたりで書いた歌の中で『みんなにおはよう』という歌は大変子どもたちに人気がありました。この歌がどのようにして『ハッピーバースデイトゥーユー』という替え歌に変わっていったのかは誰にも知るよしがありませんが、パティのクラスの子どもたちは『みんなにおはよう』があまりにお気に入りだったので、いろいろな場面で歌詞を変えて歌ったのがきっかけではないかという説が信じられています。
