It’s easy to compare yourself to other people. Almost everyone does it. Each person secretly says, “I’m better than she is . . . I am more intelligent than he is . . . I work harder than that guy . . . I am a nicer person than she is.” It’s fun to compare yourself to other people. It makes you feel noble and good.
But comparing yourself to others is meaningless. Why? It has no meaning because there will always be people who are better than you. And there will always be people who are worse than you. So these comparisons are a waste of time.
There is only one comparison that has meaning. What is it? It’s the comparison between you today and the person you used to be. In other words, are you a better person today than you were one year ago? If you are a better person today, that’s great: keep up the good work! But if you are not a better person today than you were in the past, then maybe it’s time for some serious changes in your life.

自分と他人を比べるのも無理はない。おそらくほとんどの人がしていることだ。誰もが心の中で「私は彼女よりはまし……彼より賢い……あの人よりもがんばっている……彼女よりもいい人間だ」などとつぶやいている。自分と他人を比べるのは慰みになる。自分が立派ないい人間になったような気分になる。
でも、自分を人と比べても意味はない。なぜなら、あなたよりも優れている人がいつだっているからだ。そして、あなたより劣った人間も常にいる。だからこんな比較をしても時間の無駄だ。
意味がある比較はただひとつ。それは、今日の自分とかつての自分とを比較することだ。言い換えれば、１年前よりもいい人間になっているかどうかだ。過去よりも向上していると思えたら、自信をもってそのまま進めばいい。でも、今の自分が過去の自分よりも人間として進歩したと思えないなら、人生を真剣に見直すべき時だろう。
