Imagine that you are going to a big meeting. Or, imagine that you’re going on a special date. You probably choose your clothes carefully. You choose clothes that look good on you. You might put on several different outfits before choosing the clothes that look best.
It’s true that clothes are important. As the proverb says, “Clothes make the man.” But clothes are not the most important thing.
If you have an unpleasant look on your face, it doesn’t matter how nice your clothes are! If your face looks mean or angry, people will dislike you. They won’t listen to your ideas. They will not want to spend time with you. Always remember that a kind, open face is more valuable than the most beautiful, most stylish clothes.
So take a look at yourself in a mirror. What is the expression on your face? Do you smile often? Or do you frown most of the time? Is your expression warm and friendly? Or is it cold and proud? The expression on your face could help you succeed . . . or make you fail.

大切な会議に向かう時のことを思い浮かべてみよう。あるいは特別なデートでもいい。おそらく念入りに服を選ぶだろう。自分をもっともよく見せてくれる服を選び出す。ためしに何着か着てみたりするだろう。
服が大切なのは間違いない。「服が人を作る（馬子にも衣装）」という諺もある。しかし、服よりも大切なものがある。
もしもあなたが不満げな表情を浮かべていたら、どんな素敵な服を着ていても意味がない。意地悪そうな、あるいは怒った顔をしていると、人はあなたを好きにはならないだろう。あなたの考えに耳を傾けない。あなたと一緒に過ごしたいとは思わない。優しくて温かみのある表情の方が、このうえなくきれいでおしゃれな服よりも価値があるということを覚えておこう。
さあ、鏡で自分の顔を見てみよう。どんな表情をしているだろうか。いつも笑顔が浮かんでいるだろうか。気付くと眉間にしわがよっているようなことはないか。温かみのあるやさしい顔をしているだろうか。冷たくつんとすました顔になってはいないだろうか。成功するも失敗するも、表情次第だ。
