Good Loans and Bad Loans

To provide financing means to make a loan. Broadly speaking, there are good loans and bad loans. Banks usually don’t provide bad financing, and try their best to make only good loans. So what, then, is a good loan?

A good loan is one in which the borrowed money is backed by assets or collateral. With a housing loan, it is backed by the home. With a car loan, it is backed by the car. If the loan is defaulted, repayment can be made by sale of the assets. For that reason, this type of financing has a low interest rate.

A bad loan, on the other hand, is one not backed by assets or collateral. If the borrowed money is used for everyday expenses or for entertainment, the only resort in case of default is personal bankruptcy. Since the risks are high with this type of loan, interest is also high.

Of course, even when the loan is not backed by assets, there are cases, such as student loans, when the loan cannot necessarily be called bad since there is a good possibility of repayment. In this type of financing, plans for repayment become a major issue.

融資するとは貸付けをすることです。借金には普通、良い借金と悪い借金があります。銀行は、普通は危険な融資はしませんので、ある程度は良い借金だけを行います。では良い借金とは一体何でしょうか？

良い借金とは借りたお金で資産が残ることです。住宅ローンならば住宅が残り、自動車ローンならば自動車が残ります。万が一融資の返済に滞った場合は、そうした資産を売却することによって返済が可能になるからです。よって、こうした融資は利息が抑えられています。

悪い借金とはその逆で、資産が残らないものです。日々の生活費や遊びに使う費用を融資でまかなうことは、返済が滞った場合は自己破産しか方法がなくなります。こうしたリスクがあるために利息も高くなっているのです。

もちろん将来に返済の当てがある場合や、学資ローンなど、資産がなくとも一概に悪いとは言えない場合もありますが、融資を受ける場合にはそこの計画性が問題になるのです。
