Traditional Japanese Enterprise System
Up to now, what has been the organizational framework of Japanese companies? Traditionally Japanese companies have competed with the world through organizational strength. Managerial decisions were not made autocratically by the CEO but by a consensus of the board of directors.
To strengthen the organization, lifetime employment and seniority were made absolutes, and amicable relations with labor unions were emphasized; this formed the basic foundation. Although this type of organization is often criticized these days, it was in fact one of the driving forces behind the rapid growth following World War II.
As a result, however, decision-making was slow, risk-taking avoided, and individuality frowned upon. This was fine in a period when technological prowess and organizational strength ensured good sales, but it’s no longer good enough today.

今まで、日本の企業はどういう仕組みになっていたのでしょうか？ 従来、日本の企業は組織力で世界と闘っていました。経営判断も社長が独裁的に決定を下すことは少なく、役員会の合議で決定されていました。
また、組織を維持するために、終身雇用と年功序列によるヒエラルキーの絶対化と、労働組合との友好的な関係が基本でした。現在こうした企業形態が批判されていますが、戦後の高度成長の過程ではこの仕組みこそが日本の強みを支えていたことも事実です。
しかし、その結果、日本の企業は意思決定が遅く、リスクを取ることを嫌い、個性を生かしにくくなってしまったのです。それでも技術力と組織力でものが売れていた時代は良かったのですが、現状ではそれでは間に合わなくなってしまったのです。
