Future of Japanese Companies [1]
Japanese companies are now struggling with this issue of cost. There are two possible solutions. One is to lower costs as much as humanly possible. The other is to produce products of such high technological quality that other companies cannot match them.
The typical way of lowering costs is to do manufacturing in countries abroad with low labor costs. A great many Japanese companies have chosen this path and moved overseas. The danger here is that that employment in Japan will suffer and the economy will shrink.
What’s more, as we saw in 2012 when anti- Japanese riots broke out in China, there is the risk of political uncertainty. The path Japanese companies should take from here on is to raise their technological expertise to an even higher level and avoid becoming entangled in low-cost competition. This would allow employment to remain in Japan and make effective use of Japan’s traditional strengths.
