Where does the heart shape come from?
You will get different explanations of the origin of the heart shape depending on whom you talk to. One theory says that the heart shape simply came from early scientists and doctors trying to draw a picture of the human heart.
Another theory says the heart shape came from the seed of an African plant called silphium. Although silphium was commonly used as a spice for cooking, people also believed it was an effective form of birth control. Silphium was so important in the African market that coins were produced with a design that was shaped like a Silphium seed and that looked like today’s symbol of the heart. Because of its properties as a form of birth control, people related the seed and its shape with sex, and later with love.
Still another theory says that the heart shape came from the Catholic Church. In the 17th century, Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque had a famous vision of a heart shape surrounded by thorns. Her vision was interpreted as the heart of Jesus Christ, and it came to symbolize love and loyalty. But this theory is not very popular because many researchers believe the heart shape was around much earlier than the 17th century.

また別の説によればハートの形はカトリック教会から来ているとも言われます。17世紀、聖マーガレット・メアリー・アラコックが「いばらが巻かれた心臓」の幻影を見て有名になりました。聖マーガレットの幻視したものはイエス・キリストの心臓であると解釈され、それが愛と忠誠のシンボルとなったのです。でも多くの研究者は心臓の形は17世紀よりも早い時期に出現していると考えているため、この説はあまり広く受け入れられていません。
