Why are traffic lights red, yellow, and green?
Everywhere around the world, traffic lights are red, yellow, and green. In every country, these colors mean the same thing: stop, slow, and go. This was all started by an American man named Lester Farnsworth Wire, who created the first traffic light in 1912.
At first, Wire’s traffic light only had two colors, red and green. He used these colors because they were already being used by ships and trains to mean “stop” and “go.” Red was chosen as the color to signal “stop” because the color has a very attention-grabbing affect on the human brain.
People notice the color red right away. The color red also creates feelings of anxiety in many people. It was the perfect color to use as a way to tell people to stop.
The color green, on the other hand, is a color that usually does not upset the human brain. It is a color that occurs in nature, and it seemed like the right color to mean, “go ahead and continue on.”
Later on, as the traffic light became more developed, people realized they needed a sign to prepare drivers to stop. The color yellow was chosen because it was the least similar color to both red and green. It was chosen over the color white because a white light could easily be mistaken for a normal street light at night.

世界中のどの地域でも信号機の色は赤と黄と緑と決まっています。どの国でもそれぞれ「止まれ」「ゆっくり」「進め」という同じ意味を持っているのです。これは1912年にアメリカ人のレスター・ファーンズワース・ワイア氏が最初の交通信号機を作ったのが始まりです。
最初、ワイア氏の信号機は赤と緑の２つの色しかついていませんでした。この2つの色を選んだのは、すでに船舶と鉄道の世界で「止まれ」と「進め」の意味で使われていたためです。赤は脳に働きかけ、人の注意をとても強くひくため「止まれ」の意味として採用されていたのです。
人は赤という色をただちに認識します。また赤は多くの人にとって不安の気持ちをかき立てるそうです。そのような理由で、赤は人に「止まれ」と注意をうながすのにたいへん適しているのです。
一方、緑は通常人の脳を刺激しません。この色は自然の世界でもよく見られ、この色が「前に進め」とか「続けなさい」と言っているように感じるのです。
後に、信号機がさらに発展するなかで人々は運転手が止まる準備をするための合図が必要だと考えるようになりました。そして赤と緑の両方から最も遠い色である黄色が選ばれたのです。これには白が選ばれそうなところを黄色が勝ち抜いたという経緯があります。なぜなら、白の光は夜、通りでいくらでも見かけることのある普通の明かりの色と容易に見間違えるからです。
