Companies and Entrepreneurs
In capitalist countries like Japan and the United States, companies start with ordinary people offering to society their skills or services. This is entrepreneurship, or the starting of a new business.
For instance, let’s say someone is clever with their hands and carves wooden ornaments for the home, and further let’s say he makes a living by selling these objects. Such a person is not an entrepreneur; he is an individual craftsman. The profit from this type of work is limited.
But let’s say that someone hires a number of people who have these skills, and also hires people to sell the products produced. When things go well with this group, production and sales increase. This is entrepreneurship, the starting of a new business.
When an ordinary person starts a company, it is called a private enterprise. But when the central government or a municipal government start up large-scale projects, they are called public or national corporations. In capitalist countries like Japan and the United States, almost all enterprises and corporations are private.
企業と起業
日本やアメリカといった資本主義の国では、企業は普通の人が自分の技術やサービスを社会に問うことから始まります。これが起業です。
例えば、手先が器用で、木に彫刻をすることがうまい人は、家に置く装飾品を作り、それを売り、生計を立てます。そこで止まれば、起業ではなく個人の職人です。売上げも限られます。
しかし、同じような技術を持っている人を雇い、さらに、そこで生産したものを売る人も雇って、集団で生産販売すると、生産量も売上げも増えていきます。これが起業なのです。
このように、日本では普通の人が起業するので、民間企業と言われます。これに対し、国や、地方自治体が、最初から大規模な事業を始めることもあります。これを公営企業／国営企業と言います。日本やアメリカのような資本主義の国では、企業のほとんどは民間企業で構成されています。
