株式の本は難しいことばかり書かれていてイマイチピンッ! とこないのですが、今さら人に聞くのも… とためらってしまいがちです。

What Is the Stock Market? / 株式市場

Stocks (or shares) can be freely bought and sold. Anyone can invest in a variety of companies. The place where this is done is called the stock market (or stock exchange).

株式会社の株は自由に売り買いすることができます。誰でも自由にいろんな会社に投資することができるのです。その株の売り買いを行う場所が株式市場です。

While it is true that any stock can be freely bought and sold, in reality this is difficult to do unless a company’s shares have been offered to the public on a stock exchange. Fundamentally, stock exchanges only list shares that have been made public.

株は自由に売買できるとは言っても、その会社が株式を公開していないと現実には売買は難しくなります。株式市場は基本的には株式を公開している会社の株だけを扱っています。

There are many types of public offerings of stock. Stock that is bought and sold only in off-exchange trading is called over-the-counter (OTC) stock. If the aim is to collect the largest amount of capital possible, then the stock is listed on a stock exchange after satisfying strict conditions. This is called a public offering or listing on a stock exchange.

株式公開にもいろいろあって、証券会社の店頭だけで売買されるのが店頭公開株です。さらに広く資本を集めたい場合は、厳しい審査を受けて証券取引所に公開することになります。これを上場と言います。

At present there are five stock exchanges in Japan. The largest is the Tokyo Stock Exchange, followed by the Osaka Securities Exchange, the Nagoya Stock Exchange, the Fukuoka Stock Exchange, and the Sapporo Securities Exchange. (In 2013 the Osaka Securities Exchange merged with the Tokyo Stock Exchange.) A huge volume of stock is traded at these exchanges, and it is possible for companies to raise unlimited amounts of capital.

現在日本には証券取引所が5カ所あります。一番大きいのが東京証券取引所で、次に大阪証券取引所、名古屋証券取引所、福岡証券取引所、札幌証券取引所です（2013年、大阪証券取引所は東京証券取引所と合併しました）。ここでは、大量に株の売買が行われますので、企業としても広く大きな資金調達が可能になるのです。
