Interest [3]

Interest has another important side to it. When interest is high, people usually don’t borrow if they can possibly help it. On the other hand, when interest rates are low, it becomes easy to borrow.

Let’s take housing loans as an example. Say you take out a 30-year loan of ¥30,000,000. At a fixed annual interest rate of 5%, every month you will be repaying approximately ¥160,000, for a grand total of ¥58,100,000

But let’s say that the annual rate is 7%. Then the monthly repayment would come to ¥200,000 for a grand total of ¥72,050,000. Just a 2% change in interest produces a difference of ¥40,000 in monthly
payments and ¥14,000,000 in total.

When large amounts of money are needed for investing in plant and equipment, a change in the interest rate can result in a huge difference in repayment fees. In other words, interest plays a big role in companies’ and individuals’ willingness to buy, and is highly significant for the economy as a whole.
