I’d like to transfer $400 from my – – –  account to my checking account.

Interest [2]

When you deposit money in a bank, the interest varies according to the type of deposit. In general, there are three types: checking deposits, savings deposits, and time deposits. Checking deposits have no interest, and time deposits have higher interest than savings deposits.

Checking deposits are used by companies to settle accounts, and are not much used by ordinary people. They serve the purpose of a wallet, and money is continually being deposited and withdrawn, and that is why there is no interest.

While not as frequently as checking deposits, savings deposits are also used to settle various accounts. Banks therefore view them as somewhat risky and not suitable as funds for lending activities. On the other hand, time deposits usually remain in the bank until maturity and are therefore suitable as funds for lending activities. That’s why time deposits have a higher interest rate than savings deposits.

*ちなみに…*

savings=save+ing
